Educational Discrimination

We help students and families who have been harmed in school fight for justice.

Students often face unfair treatment, discrimination, and harassment at the hands of their peers, their teachers, or school administrators. We represent students, families, and educators who have faced bullying or harassment on the basis of their race, gender, sexual orientation, disability, or other protected characteristics. Our work in this area includes:

  • Filing and successfully resolving a lawsuit against the New York City Department of Education on behalf of a Queens public-school student who was relentlessly bullied after coming out as gay.

  • Representing students who have been bullied or hazed in private schools to obtain corrective action, including new anti-bullying and anti-hazing policies.

  • Filing and successfully resolving a New Jersey district over a high-school teacher's profanity-filled racist rant.

  • Helping negotiate pre-suit resolutions of claims involving discrimination, harassment, and unfair treatment.

  • Advising parents of gender non-conforming students about their rights in school.

  • Assisting educators in navigating internal disciplinary processes.
